But how did they manage to do it? “Through careful coordination, and by ensuring that the airport managed the program,” he says. “We didn’t go out and hire a Bechtel or a Turner Engineering to manage it for us; we managed it ourselves, although we used those kinds of fi rms to do a lot of the work. By keeping a fi rm hand on controlling what was going on we ensured that the operations people were always built into the process and got the chance to voice their concerns and be part of our everyday planning.” He makes the point that their concerns were taken seriously, which might not have been the case with an outside contractor, because they were colleagues. “There was a lot of creative work on the part of our construction team,” he continues. “For example, we recycled 98 percent of the buildings.” All the concrete was crushed up and remixed, and materials were reused wherever possible, which avoided the disruption of hauling everything off-site and bringing in new materials. “We had concrete plants right on-site,” he says, “and we preassembled many structures off-site and installed them in blocks, so as not to have huge demands for lay down areas, and so on.” At all times, he says, the watchword was safety, safety, safety. “It’s our No1 priority, and I’m pleased to say that we had a stellar safety record throughout the whole construction.” As if all those challenges were not enough, the last few years have turned airports into the most dynamic of environments.
