July 07 Businessexcellence Nova Gold Resources Inc. 57 Nearly ten years ago, Rick Van Nieuwenhuyse bought NovaGold as a shell company, used his background and experience as an exploration geologist to acquire some promising properties, and began an aggressive exploration program to build a substantial resource base for the company. Van Nieuwenhuyse grew up in Alaska, had explored the Nome district on the West coast of Alaska as a geologist, and recognized the potential to develop a hard-rock mine in the area. The company’s 100-percent-owned Nome Operations, NovaGold’s first acquisition in 1999, includes Rock Creek, Big Hurrah and Nome Gold. Rock Creek will be NovaGold’s first producing mine, with first production targeted for Q3 this year and full commercial production anticipated at 100,000 ounces per year. NovaGold also owns 50 percent of the Galore Creek copper-gold project in British Columbia in partnership with Teck Cominco, and 70 percent of the Donlin Creek gold project in Alaska in a joint venture with Barrick Gold. Galore Creek and Donlin Creek are among the world’s largest copper-gold and gold deposits, respectively. Also in Alaska, NovaGold is earning a 51 percent interest
