Bureau Veritas North America already has 72 offi ces in the US (probably more by the time you read this article), and generated over $300 million in annual revenues last year. Group president and chief executive offi cer Frank Piedelièvre remarked in his message in the 2006 annual report: “The aim of the Bureau Veritas brand is to become a global reference. As we expand further, we want it to be recognized as the best name for inspection, testing and certifi cation activities in the areas of quality, health & safety, environment and social responsibility.” In a twist sometimes known as ‘what goes around, comes around’, Bureau Veritas is itself likely to undergo at least a partial change of ownership in the near future, as WENDEL, the French private equity house that owns 98.8 percent of the group, has begun preparations for an initial public offering (IPO) for what could be potentially a $5.5 billon fl otation in October 2007 on the Paris Bourse. E-J Electric Installation aims for excellence, as Ruari McCallion learned from president, Tony Mann Businessexcellence September 07 74 In a year’s time the Yankee Stadium, home of New York’s beloved baseball team, will be torn down and reduced to rubble. Out of the ashes will rise a new, state-of-the-art sports facility to rival the best in the world. The timetable is tight. “There’s no room for slippage,” said Tony Mann, president of E-J Electric Installation (EJEI). “The new stadium has to be ready for the start of the 2009 season.” The lights have to come on, the elevators and HVAC has to work, everything has to be in place. The electrical installation work has been entrusted to Mann’s company, in no small part due to the reputation it has established for excellence, and for delivering on time and to specification. “We’ve grown E-J Electric in a lot of different areas, from power generation to installations for financial services, such as the $50 million contract for the Bank of America at 1111 Avenue of the Americas in New York City,” he said. “We’re installing four 2.4MW multimodule uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units; six 2MW generators that had to be lifted to the seventh floor, with a redundant power system through the whole building.” Cabling runs to around 300 miles, through 68 miles of conduit. But it’s not the biggest project EJEI has undertaken in the past few years. It has been involved in the construction of two 500MW power plants, one for New York Power Authority and the other for Astoria Energy. EJEI was established in 1899, so it can be said to be in its third century of operations. With revenues in the region of $160 million in fiscal 2005 and around 600 employees, this Queens, NYC-based company is the oldest, and probably the largest independent electrical installation and contracting company in the US. It’s still familyowned; Tony Mann is a grandson of Jacques R Mann, who joined in 1912 as an estimator and construction engineer. “What differentiates us are our engineering abilities,” said Mann. “We have 25 full-time engineers on our payroll, which we believe is the largest number for any electrical contractor in the country.” With that amount of expertise in-house, EJEI is able to offer clients more than just a contracting service. It takes the idea of partnership seriously. “We have a different approach from most in our business,” he continued. “We take every drawing we get from consulting engineers and redo them with Color AutoCad. We generate several sketches, which enable the electricians to work on installation from the start, rather than spending time figuring out how they’re going to do it.” Working in a virtual world brings benefits in terms of speed, productivity and right-first-time accuracy. “The upfront effort pays off for everyone. Construction and installation goes better. Our approach requires a lot of engineering planning but clients are more satisfied.” Investment in 3D CAD drawings and virtual simulation takes the EJEI concept a step further. “We’re using 3D in the Yankee Stadium Engineering excellence
