With USA Jet Airlines as a partner subsidiary, those hard assets are available to serve on-demand customers. “However, we only deploy our assets into a solution when we can do so at the lowest price,” Healy continues. “Customers continue to gravitate toward the on-demand solutions approach because it leads to great service and signifi cant savings,” says Quin. Overall, the model can result in 40 percent hard-cost savings and given the amount of effort that would be required to match the work the platform can complete in a matter of minutes, it’s easy to understand why. “Picture a customer on the phone trying to get quotes for all the various shipping options from different vendors in each transportation mode then waiting for those responses. That is an enormous undertaking and that does not even account for judging the quality differences that might lie behind the price quotes. Worse yet, the customer may make one contact and choose the wrong mode. PTM gets to the right mode and optimizes by carrier within the mode.” The stakes can be high, of course, in shipping decisions as well. A late delivery could mean lost production and cost millions of dollars. Without a key part, an assembly line may have to shut down.
