64 The low expectations of prevention campaigns and structural change of sexual culture in Africa is alarming. The pressure the disease applies to medical care is thought be an inhibitor for improvement. A new epidemic is expected to emerge, where HIV occurs together with the hepatitis C virus ( HCV). This co- infection will lead to an increase in the mortality rate on the continent. Already the effects of this epidemic can be seen on a large- scale, and prevention of it is thought to be nearly impossible. Intensive prevention campaigns have been shown to work in several countries ( for instance, in Uganda where the percentage of infected people dropped by 15%). However, they don't seem to have taken hold in the continent throughout. The cause for this problem is a complex mix of illiteracy, culture, the position of women in society, religion and poverty. Prevention is difficult, but essential. A continent on the move: 5.
