Strategic management: Invizion T here's something fascinating about intelligence work. Historically, governments have kept information gathering and management operations very close to their vests, but the public sector ( or big business, for that matter) is not always the most effi cient at managing specialized operations. If it makes sense to outsource your material procurement needs or your HR requirements, why not use professionals to manage some of the more sensitive stuff too? That thinking seems to be behind at least part of Invizion's quite remarkable growth since it was founded in 2003; since then its revenues have grown at close to 200 per cent annually. According to CEO Steven Johnson, Invizion provides professional and technical services in three primary business areas: information management and technology; intelligence and security assurances; and intercultural and multilingual operations. Because it is so closely involved in defence and intelligence, you might expect it to be led by an ex-soldier, but Johnson is a certified public accountant who worked many years in public accounting and management consultancy before joining a small government contractor as director of operations. Johnson, along with his co- founder and company president George Washington, who also worked with a mid- tier government contractor, in common with more than 80 per cent of Invizion's employees, support customers primarily in classified environments. Information Management and Technology ( IMT) includes such functions as knowledge management and technology solutions to include database and website development, though becoming more focused on a niche provided by the move to open government. However, the Freedom of Information Act ( FOIA) has been on the statute since 1967. It allows the full or partial disclosure of previously unreleased information and documents controlled by the United States government, and the key word here is " partial." Freedom of information is a principle; in practice, there may be any number of reasons why a request can be denied, and these may relate to ongoing litigation or simply because certain information would be valuable to a terrorist or a criminal.
