104 tons a year using conventional biological treatment. Monitoring the environmental impact of the tannery also showed a reduction in biochemical oxygen demand ( BOD) of 99%, chemical oxygen demand ( COD) of 95%, and chromium of 97% ( performance during January 2008- June 2008). Elmo is sending regular reports to the authorities ( Länsstyrelsen) about the performance of the plant. Financial data The investment in the plant was slightly above ? 5 million, of which the EU LIFE environment foundation granted foundation of ? 0.9 million. The plant has been dimensioned for a flow of around 1250m ³ / day. The running costs mainly consist of personnel, chemicals, energy, maintenance and sludge treatment. The total treatment cost for the dimensioned flow, including the investment cost - but excluding the cost of sludge handling - is around ? 1.5 to ? 1.6 per m ³ , which is a very competitive price for wastewater treatment. As part of the contract with the European Commission, Elmo Leather has performed a number of dissemination activities about
the project to stakeholders ( leather industry, other industries with similar wastewater as e. g. textile industry, consultants, wastewater treatment companies, authorities, decision makers and the general public). Summary The environmental policy at Elmo Leather shows that it is possible to substantially reduce the environmental impact of leather production. Elmo did first minimize the pollution by introducing best available technologies in the production, by changing processes and substituting chemicals. According to John Olsson, sales and marketing director, automotive leather, " The waste water treatment plant has put Elmo Leather one step closer to becoming one with nature". Design work and annual design show To increase it's prescence on the market, Elmo arranges an annual design show which mainly turns to designers but also engineers and purchasers as well. This show strengthens relations with existing customers and also attracts potential future customers. Throughout a five- year period, Elmo has arranged a design show once a year with the purpose of show new and running articles in a attractive and inspirational way. The design show includes everything from endurance material to very top of the range. Products can also be presented with new embossing, embroideries, colours and qualities in a tempting and exciting way. The shows are greatly appreciated, and offer an opportunity for supplier and customer to meet and exchange ideas. The events show all possibilities that Elmo gives, and provides inspiration for next- generation interiors, but also a chance to emphasis Elmo's environmental work as the cleanest tannery in the world. This year's design show will take part in the beginning of September. " To put the whole concept together, Elmo works with a textile designer from the University college of Borås. It will be a great way to come back after the summer vacation" says Johansson. A holistic view of the wastewater treatment plant is given below. more information? click here!
