In fact, the mine's cost profile has improved 21 percent in the past year. The mine's operators keep close tabs on all aspects of operations- most of which are fully automated- using wireless communications devices and all key performance indicators tracked in real time. " We constantly monitor the entire nervous system of the operations 24/ 7," Belleau comments. A community of just 1,800 people, Matagami is located approximately 250 kilometers ( 155 miles) north of Val d'Or in western Quebec Province and relies almost exclusively on the mining operations to provide jobs and livelihoods. As a result, Xstrata is a major contributor to civic life in the region. " If you work here, you get involved in the ski club and golf club and minor league hockey in Matagami," says Belleau. " Our employees are part of the community, and as a company we work to support all that they do." At current levels, production will continue for at least another three to four years at the Perseverance mine, and Xstrata and joint venture partner Donner Metals are already exploring for future opportunities. In fact, the partnership earned an Outstanding Achievement Exploration Award for work done in an area just a few kilometers from the existing mine.
