So it was natural enough when Xstrata decided in 2006 to press ahead with developing its zinc- yielding property at Perseverance near Lake Matagami in upper Québec for it to choose an EPCM partner that it knew could deliver a working mine in the shortest possible time. Geological studies had shown that there were high-grade zinc and copper deposits at the site. This particular mine has a comparatively short life of five years. It is just about as environmentally friendly as a mine can be, says Daniel Cossette, Hatch's project manager on the Perseverance job. The waste rock that is removed from the earth during the mine development phase is retuned gradually underground. The ore extracted from the mine stopes is crushed and Attention The new Perseverance zinc and copper mine near Matagami in Northern Québec commenced production in July 2008, five months ahead of schedule and within its original budget.
