University of Calgary NOVEMBER 09 www. bus- ex. com 57 T he city of Calgary, Alberta, has been expanding significantly in the last five years, both in development and population, mainly due to the explosive growth of the petroleum industry. The result has been a need for more facilities and upgrades at the University of Calgary to keep up with the increased enrollment. Current enrollment at the research- intensive public university, which was founded in 1966 and has its main campus in the northwest part of the city, is approximately 28,000. The University of Calgary launched an aggressive capital expansion, pegged at approximately $ 1.5 billion, several years ago to expand and upgrade its teaching and learning facilities. The expansion has been funded through a variety of sources, including provincial and federal governments and private donors. Engineering is a key program at the university, notes Steve Dantzer, associate vice president of facilities development, since all disciplines of engineers are in demand today.
