JANUARY 10 www. bus- ex. com 203 M ost organizations entering a new industry, especially one as technically demanding and commercially complex as power generation, do so on the basis of a single technology. Pristine Power decided to do it with a single concept and multiple technologies. Jeff Myers, founder and chief executive, from his headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, defines the business as one not pioneering new ideas but rather capitalizing on proven technologies that can deliver green energy. " The driving force behind the business," he explains, " is a group of five key individuals with complementary skills who can see opportunities and know how best to exploit them." Pristine Power therefore develops and co- owns and operates plants of various kinds that will produce and sell electricity and in some cases sell process steam to industrial users. The company's aim is to become a leading independent power producer in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta, and it is currently contracted or in the final stages of negotiation for over $ 500 million worth of projects. Pristine believes in having people on the ground and close contacts with people who matter. " Thanks to our executive and non- executive teams," says Myers, " we have good intelligence and learn about opportunities early. Our contacts are impeccable. When we lobby, we can't always guarantee to make changes happen quickly, but we do have access to the right decision makers." The business was formed in 2002, and the first project it tackled was started in a climate in which activity in conventional power generation had been usurped by interest in green generation projects. Pristine had seen an opportunity for generating electricity using the waste heat recovery process, but it had an early setback as newcomer green shades " The driving force behind the business is a group of five key individuals with complementary skills who can see opportunities and know how best to exploit them" |
