Right in the center of the city's exquisite natural beauty, where the Coastal Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, a new self- contained and sustainable mixed- use community is rising from the last piece of remaining waterfront in the downtown core of the city. The new 65- acre community with its focal point, Millennium Water, is designed to set a new benchmark for sustainable urban development, and it is the largest residential project in North America. Millennium Water's design embraces a European model focused on lower- rise buildings, narrower streets and inner courtyards. " This was done to enhance the flavor of social connectivity through the public and private spaces around which the village's 22 buildings cluster," explains Roger Bayley, founding principal for Vancouver- based Merrick Architecture, one of five architectural firms involved with this project valued at $ 1 billion ( CAD). Bayley is also the design manager for all eight parcels within the project.
